WritingBricks

WritingBricks for Mac

Edit a single Markdown file, or work on a whole writing project. Open an ordinary file without creating a project, or organise scenes, paragraphs and notes as bricks you can move.

Download for Mac (free) WritingBricks.dmg · about 7 MB

Version 0.1.2 · macOS 11 Big Sur or later · Apple silicon and Intel

Install it

  1. Open the disk image you downloaded, WritingBricks.dmg, usually in your Downloads folder.
  2. Drag WritingBricks into the Applications folder.
  3. Open WritingBricks from Applications. The first time, macOS asks once whether you want to open an app downloaded from the internet: click Open. WritingBricks is signed and notarised by Apple.

Got the app from someone in a chat? macOS may refuse to open a copy that came through a chat app such as WhatsApp. Download it from this page instead.

Used an earlier version? The first time you reopen a project, WritingBricks asks you to choose its folder again (Choose the folder…). That is the Mac’s permission for that folder, and it is asked only once.

Getting started

  1. Choose Open Markdown file to edit one .md file. Your changes save to that file, without creating a project or extra folders.
  2. For a whole project, Open a folder, including an existing WritingBricks project or the folder you work in with Claude Code. WritingBricks shows every folder and file in it. For a folder that already holds Markdown files it asks first, and it never moves or renames them.
  3. In project mode, at the top of AGENTS.md and CLAUDE.md it adds a short note on how the folder is organised, so any AI agent you open there knows how to work on the text.
  4. Split a text where you are with Split (or ⌘↩), or into paragraphs, and put it back together with Join. Drag bricks to move them, and export to Word, EPUB, PDF or Markdown.
  5. In a folder with a lot in it, Show only this folder (right-click, or ⌘↓) shows just that folder in the binder.
  6. Deleting loses nothing: the files go to the project’s trash, and Undo (or ⌘Z) puts them back where they were.

WritingBricks for Mac works on files and project folders on your Mac. A document or book in Dropbox or iCloud Drive opens from the disk, and Dropbox or iCloud keep it in sync.
